I'd bet we have all had one or more "spiritual awakenings". I want to share about my first one. It was very powerful!
I had been in recovery a very short time. My hubby was jsut out of his first rehab and i KNEW he must attend his meetings and work his program or he'd drink. So IN my best helpfulness controlling manner, I posted a list of the times and places of the local AA meetings. I put copies in his truck, on the TV stand by his bed, on the fridge, and on the bathroom mirror. I'd gently remind him such as "If you hurry and get dressed you can make the 5 PM meeting>" I could tell he was getting irritated about it. I decided to let it go. To not mention it. To take down all but one schedule. (jsut because he had asked me to make the schedule...just had not asked me to make so many copies and hound him about it.) I made a GOD BOX. I wrote on a paper that I wanted to leave his meeting attendance or non attendance totally to be HIS CHOICE. I prayed about it as I put the slip of paper in the box. And it was amazing. It felt as if a HUGE weight was lifted from my shoulders.
I truly think it was a spiritual awakening. I knew my HP would take care of it.
14 years and 5 rehabs later, I still don't bug him about meetings. He makes the choices. I dont get on him about them.
Have you had a spiritual awakening? Would you share with us>? LIN

Yes I've had many spiritual awakenings and continue to have them because to me, a spiritual awakening is anytime a light goes on and I learn or realize something that changes my life, even in a small way or something that helps me on my journey.
The first one that really struck me...like a whack on the head... was when attending an Al Anon meeting and someone kept saying how important it is to stop blaming others and start taking responsibility for oneself. That idea met with resistance at first...STOP BLAMING, are you kidding? My life is in turmoil and it sure isn't my fault. But one day, wham, it hit me, I understood. My life is my responsibility. Well, okay, it is, lol. But the old habit of blaming was a bit hard to change along with knowing it was up to me to change myself, my life but with time and practice I'm making strides and am way better for it. Now I look to myself for answers, what a relief for others and very empowering for me. SaraLee |
