quote: TRADITION FIVE:
Each group has but one primary purpose -- to carry its message to the addict who still suffers.
"It is the great paradox of A.A. that we know we can seldom keep the precious gift of recovery unless we give it away... For us, if we neglect those who are still sick, there is unremitting danger to our own lives and sanity." Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, pg 151
For me, this is the most important Tradition. I must never take my sobriety for granted and it is important to share my recovery with others. Someone was there for me, to show me the way, to share their experience, strength and hope with me, to guide me on my road to recovery.
There are long-timers in my home group who feel that if you don't get newcomers at the meeting, the group isn't doing it's job and should close the doors. I have the youngest amount of sobriety in the group. AA has changed since they came into recovery. More NA groups are in the city and CA has developed here too. There are more AA meetings as well. CA uses the Big Book as their Basic Text. A lot of alcoholic who are dual addicted go there. Very few people who come into recovery are pure alcoholics these days. They generally have a problems with pot, crack, cocaine, etc. They don't even take into account the food, work, exercise. gambling, and other addictions. They relapse and they wonder why they stay sick.
They put a plug in the jug and act out in old behaviors and patterns. Then they say, AA didn't work for them when they relapse. I find this very scarey. It says we are to "practice these principles in all our affairs."
