Unity in our program does not mean conformity. Unity means joining for a common purpose, despite our differences. I can disagree without being disagreeable. Excerpt from the Pocket Sponsor, By The Hazelden author of ' Day By Day' & other Meditation Books

The only difference between stumbling blocks and stepping stones is how you use them. No person, place, or thing can place blocks in your path if you chose to use them as steps. I lift my feet as I use the blocks before me to (Twelve) Step up to the challenge. Excerpt from the Pocket Sponsor, By The Hazelden author of ' Day By Day' & other Meditation Books

I can be like this bee, not knowing which way to go. Should I, could I, what if, if only, .... When I turn it over to my Higher Power, I am given the direction and the knowingness. The steps appear to get out of where I am at, be it depression, quandry, helplessness, fear, insecurity, etc. |

Pain is the difference between what is and what you would like it to be. I can't change the wind, but I can adjust my sails. Excerpt from the Pocket Sponsor, By The Hazelden author of 'Day By Day' & other Meditation Books
Having dealt with chronic pain for many years, I have learned that when I make that adjustment in my life, the pain is manageable. It generally means proper rest, diet, exercise, and just getting out and about and living, not letting my pain rule my life.
My favorite saying is "Go away, I haven't got time to deal with you now." The social worker who got me into recovery was surprised when I told her that I had developed this attitude. She said, "Good for you, I generally have to teach it." Sometimes I am not there, and that is alright. When the awareness comes, the rest falls into place.
Today I went to see my rheumatolgist and he has put me on extra vitamin D. I already take liquid magnesium and calcium. My bone density tests were very good, so when I treat my body right, good things happen. The Vitamin D is suppose to prevent my feet from swelling. I have five types of arthritis. If one doesn't get you, another one does. I take one celebrex tablet, two glucosomine, and 2-4 extra strength tyenol without codeine a day for pain. The adjustment for me was to stop taking narcotic medication for pain.

Even though you are a unique human being, you are not so unique that your recovery is any different then thousands before you. If you think we don't understand something about your situation, then your disease is playing tricks on you. I am unique, just like everyone else. Excerpt from the Pocket Sponsor, By The Hazelden author of ' Day By Day' & other Meditation Books
This tells me I am not unique. I can identify with others, been there done it, wore the t-shirt. As my spouse use to say, it isn't that you didn't do it, you just never got caught. They may have traveled my journey, it is unique in the fact that it is mine. My disease is not.

Egotism is that certain something that enables a man in a rut to think he's in a groove.
I am never in a rut when I can answer this question, "What Step am I working now?"
Excerpt from the Pocket Sponsor, By The Hazelden author of 'Day By Day' & other Meditation Books
This is the nature of my disease. Selfishness, self-centeredness. The following is a quote I found on a search of an understanding of the word.
quote: Egotism is the glue with which people get stuck on themselves.

"This life's five windows of the soul,/ distorts the Heavens from pole to pole,/ and leads you to believe a lie, / When you see with, not thro', the eye." ~William Blake.
It is by looking through the windows of the soul you find the understanding of what your life presents, not by seeing with your physical eyes what is or isn't on the earth.
I close my eyes in order to "see" what my Higher Power presents to me.

Do not be satisfied to drift with the currents, hoping that somehow, somewhere all will work out. Take action. Do not put off today what you can do tomorrow. I grow as a result of my efforts, not my complacency. Excerpt from the Pocket Sponsor, By The Hazelden author of ' Day By Day' & other Meditation Books

There is nothing about you that was not intended to be. You have an incredibly sacred purpose. I am on purpose. Excerpt from the Pocket Sponsor, By The Hazelden author of ' Day By Day' & other Meditation Books
When I came into recovery, I had a problem with finding a reason for being. I was 49 by the time I got here. I figured I was living overtime and that my life was gone. It wasn't until I got involved in service that I found that I had a message to carry. I went into the jail, detox, shared my story at speaker meetings, was secretary, treasure, GSR and Inter-Group rep at my home group. I opendd seven meetings six days a week for seven years. It kept me sober and it gave me purpose. I was on disability and unable to work. I was told that I should never work longer than 3 hours at one time. Service only took 3 hours out of a day. The meeting, and the meeting before and after the meeting.

"The world can only be grasped by action, not by contemplation. The hand is the cutting edge of the mind." Jacob Bronowski, The Ascent of Man
My recovery is grasped by as much action as my Addiction is released with inaction.
Excerpt from the Pocket Sponsor, By The Hazelden author of ' Day By Day' & other Meditation Books
This is a good reminder that God won't do for me what I can do for myself. He doesn't come and grab me by the scruff of the neck and say, "Don't!" He lets me find out for myself. He gives me freedom of choice. If I choose not to make a decision, take action, it keeps coming up until the lesson is learned or I stay stuck and sick. Complacency and isolation of the body, mind and spirit leads to soul sickness for me. I knew I had to go to my meeting yesterday because on the way to the doctor's office I found myself cussing a couple of people out. Once I even said the words instead of thinking them. That is a sure sign for me. Time to take action and go to a meeting, talk to my sponsor and turn my defect over to my Higher Power. I don't like being that way. I need to take the steps to change.

When the pain of where you were is worse than the discomfort of where you are going, then you'll move.
The pain of my growth is a good sign, not a stop sign.
Excerpt from the Pocket Sponsor, By The Hazelden author of ' Day By Day' & other Meditation Books
As the saying goes, the worst day sober is better than the best day when I was using. I really like the last line. So many times I have heard sponsees say, "I'm not ready to go there yet. I don't want to deal with that." Only to go back out and relapse. What brought me to the rooms will take me back out if I don't deal with it. All those old saying that I heard from long-timers have proven true in my life.

Never give up on anybody, especially yourself. For the only time you don't fail is the last time you try anything - and it works.
I never give up on anybody. Miracles happen every day.
Excerpt from the Pocket Sponsor, By The Hazelden author of ' Day By Day' & other Meditation Books
A group in my area has a slogan on it's wall that says, "Miracles happen every day, I am one!" One of my favorite sayings is "Failure is the not trying." I am not a failure because I try something and it doesn't work. The failure is in the not trying again.

White lies, little lies, and unimportant lies are still all lies. Even small dishonesties will make your life uncomfortable. Is it worth it?
If I always tell the truth, I never have to remember what I have said.

Do not pay any attention if people accuse you of inconsistency. Of course you are! How else can you change? You cannot progress if you can't change and you can't change if you're always consistent. Practicing new behaviors is sometimes seen as inconsistent-be proud. Practice makes progress. Excerpt from the Pocket Sponsor, By The Hazelden author of ' Day By Day' & other Meditation Books
It never ceases to amaze me, when things fall together and connect in a day. I went to a morning Al-Anon meeting this morning and the topic was change. There are many changes going on in my life. My friend is leaving town and I went to say goodbye to her and give her a farewell gift. My son called me yesterday and he relapsed on the weekend. Each day I have to practice this program.

Don't "should" on yourself. You "should" have done this, you "should" have done that, is not program. What you do now, is program. Most "shoulds" are a lie. Excerpt from the Pocket Sponsor, By The Hazelden author of ' Day By Day' & other Meditation Books
